Description
Yellow irises, growing in clumps in a river by a low bridge. Two large willow trees in the middle distance.
Commentary
The composition and subject are typical of Barbara Fleming’s work in capturing the nature around her. An orthodox pastoral scene, probably southern England, the style of paint application, with small directional markings and thinner paint application, and some ‘wet over dry’ strokes bear the influence of French Impressionism- notably Monet.
Attribution
Attributed to Barbara Fleming.
Given to Barbara Fleming in the catalogue.
Catalogue wording: “Barbara Fleming”
Verso
A Fleming in RED marker pen. A Daler sticker with sizes and a price 43p [post decimilisation]
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
Condition
Good. Some contact marks to the painted surface especially the top left. Flattening to the top right corner. Post 1971.
