Description

A large farmhouse and a smaller dwelling viewed through a field of maize.

Commentary

A light palette, depicting a view of rural buildings through a cornfield, with a vineyard in the middle ground and in the distance. Thinly painted, with no impasto. Rapidly painted, most likely alla prima en plein air. The buildings are painted with delicacy, whilst the corn stands in the foreground are more loosely executed.

Attribution

Possibly Barbara Fleming (attribution uncertain).

Unsigned. The catalogue suggests Barbara Fleming; the ‘A Fleming’ marker on the reverse is not taken as evidence of Alec Fleming’s authorship.

Catalogue wording: “No signature. Possibly Barbara Fleming [A Fleming to the verso in block lettering in marker].”

How attributions are worded

Signature and inscriptions

No signature

Verso

‘A Fleming’ in marker, in block lettering. Some slight foxing. No water damage.

  • Marker, block lettering: ‘A Fleming’

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Unvarnished. Some foxing to the reverse. Good overall condition. Faint pencil framing marks to all four corners.
