Introduction

Alec Fleming and Barbara Fleming were Cheshire-based painters, active in the post-war period and throughout the 1950s to the 1980s. The works catalogued so far include portraits, still life and landscape, among them views thought to have been painted in rural France.

This archive documents a private collection of approximately 342 paintings thought to be by the two artists, together with seven sketchbooks and two sheaf bundles of loose sketches. Each painting is catalogued individually: attribution, material and support, subject, verso, comments, condition and size.

Loosely painted oil portrait of a bearded man with dark hair in a cream open-necked shirt, set against dark umber and green brushwork.
