Description

A river, with rocks in the foreground flowing towards distant hills with a single sap- ling in the foreground. The topography suggests an English location.

Commentary

Possibly an English pastoral landscape in the classical tradition. Brushwork suggests a more considered, possibly studio painting, with thin paint, with the addition of Sap Green in the foreground and slight impasto and defined brushstrokes for the sky.

Attribution

Possibly Barbara Fleming (attribution uncertain).

The catalogue’s attribution is itself tentative; it is reproduced above and not resolved here.

Catalogue wording: “B Fleming. Some of the painterly brush strokes suggest A F. ???”

How attributions are worded

Verso

A Fleming in marker in block letters.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Poor. Discolouration and yellowing to part of the panel, probably due to storage. Otherwise some slight foxing, principally to the top left. Unvarnished.
