Description

A rural house with a barn, viewed across a narrow body of water, with a small rowing boat moored in the foreground. Possibly rural France.

Commentary

A bright study of a rural farmhouse beyond a river, with a small boat moored in the foreground. The rapid, vigorous brushmarks suggest an alla prima painting executed in situ. The surface is quite loosely painted, with a distinct darkening of the palette and notably visible ‘painterly’ brushstrokes in the trees immediately behind the house.

Attribution

Barbara Fleming.

Signed ‘B Fleming’ lower right

Verso

‘A Fleming’ in block capitals. Some random paint marking, likely accidental.

  • Block capitals: ‘A Fleming’
  • Random paint marks, likely accidental

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Good condition. Unvarnished, with no damage or flaking to the paint surface. Very minimal foxing to the upper left of the panel.
