Description

A close landscape study of a distant house — possibly rural France — viewed through a field of maize, with a watering can in the foreground.

Commentary

A thinly painted study, most likely executed en plein air, with the style of the house suggesting rural France. Painted with little or no impasto and a predominance of greens, the panel was most likely painted in a single sitting.

Attribution

Barbara Fleming.

Catalogue wording: “B. Fleming – signature underlined bottom left of painting.”

How attributions are worded

Signature and inscriptions

Signed ‘B. Fleming’, underlined, lower left

Verso

‘A Fleming’ in block capitals in marker. Some water marking. Some indistinct lettering in green paint.

  • Marker, block capitals: ‘A Fleming’
  • Indistinct lettering in green paint

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Good condition overall, with no foxing or water damage. Slight staining to the reverse of the board.
