Description

A circular grindstone, in bright sunlight, propped by a Romanesq ue arched doorway. with a copse of tress in the distance.

Commentary

A close composition, likely painted en plein air. Strong shadows suggest a mid day light, possibly in rural France. An impressionistic approach is predominant especially in the depiction of the trees. Confident and ‘obvious’ brush strokes, suggest later B Fleming.

Attribution

Barbara Fleming.

Catalogue wording: “Barbara Fleming Signed in red B Fleming bottom right.”

A Fleming. block Letters in marker Some water staining to the reverse. Slight flattening damage to all four corners.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
