Description

Dappled shade on a lawn cast through garden trees. Tall trees and a brick garden wall to the mid ground.

Commentary

The bold and highly confident impasto brush strokes, in particular the sap greens, lime and yellows for the grass, form a contrast to the layered tiny dry brush work on the trees and garden wall. Likely to be an alla prima panel painted in situ.

Attribution

Possibly Barbara Fleming (attribution uncertain).

The catalogue’s attribution is itself tentative; it is reproduced above and not resolved here.

Catalogue wording: “Barbara Fleming?”

How attributions are worded

Verso

A Fleming -Marker pen in block capitals.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Fair. Damage to top left corner. Some pigment has detached at various points in the trees, leaving a rough residue.- possibly through contact when wet. No significant water marking.
