Description

Rural houses with two stands of poplar or cypress trees with a receding mountain range in the background.

Commentary

A traditional southern European scene showing receding fields studded with pan tiled houses and cypress trees. The limited palette of greys, greens and terracottas and lack of convincing shadows, suggests a painting from reference sketches, photographs or imagination.

Attribution

Attributed to Barbara Fleming.

Given to Barbara Fleming in the catalogue.

Catalogue wording: “Barbara Fleming”

How attributions are worded

Verso

A Fleming in block capitals on the toothed side of the board.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Fair. Some light foxing to the top right quarter, with some small marks where paint has been chipped away and exposed the primed board. Some storage marks are visible, but likely to be contact marks that could be readily cleaned.
