Description

An imposing church captured in bright sunlight with small yellow boats to foreground.

Commentary

Attribution of this painting is to Barbara Fleming. The hand is rapid, almost fleeting with small, quick, impressionistic brush strokes, a light palette and accuracy of depiction subsumed to the overall feel. The drawing in paint and thinned application suggest an in situ painting, possibly in southern France or the Mediterranean.

Attribution

Possibly Barbara Fleming (attribution uncertain).

The catalogue’s attribution is itself tentative; it is reproduced above and not resolved here.

Verso

A Fleming in marker to the rear.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Good condition. Some random marks to the rear of on the toothed hard board. Not varnished.
