Description

A young woman with hair up in a navy dress against a green and red background.

Commentary

The subject is less than usual for Barbara Fleming being a half portrait in three quarter view. The evidence of smaller multi directional brush work and unblended paint in the background leaving defined areas is characteristic. Most likely painted in England from a photographic reference.

How attributions are worded

Verso

A Fleming in purple marker.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Good.
