Description

A head and shoulders study of a middle aged woman in a yellow shirt with fawn sweater.

Commentary

Possibly painted contemporaneously with Cat 94 Woman With A Blue Head. A similar palette and approach to the skin tones. Bolder, more rigorous and looser than Alec Flemings late 1940s and 1950s portrait studies. Th e strong almost sculptural brush strokes and heavy impasto for the flesh tones, lean on Frank Auerbach’s influence and show that Alec Fleming was very aware of contemporaries.
