Description
A head and shoulders portrait study of a young woman in a blue head scarf and denim shirt.
Commentary
Whilst the fluidity of the impasto marks on the shirt, and the mixing of the paint on the canvas are indicative of Alec Fleming the facial features are less pre- cisely painted with little evidence of the usual light, and considered brush work.
Attribution
Possibly Alec Fleming (attribution uncertain).
The catalogue’s attribution is itself tentative; it is reproduced above and not resolved here.
Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming????”
Verso
A Fleming. Some contact marks.
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
Condition
Flattening to top left corner. Contact marks to the rear. Left hand edge appears roughly hand cut.
