Description
An abstract composition in light green and yellow tones possibly representing a storm at sea.
Commentary
This work is difficult to attribute with any certainty. The confident brush strokes and tendency towards experimentation, with a nod to previous masters, in this case JMW Turner are familiar territory for A Fleming. The execution however lacks his usual assured- ness and fluidity. Likely a sketch from imagination.
Attribution
Attributed to Alec Fleming.
Given to Alec Fleming in the catalogue.
Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming”
Verso
A Fleming.
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
Condition
Fair. A single faint vertical contact line, possibly from early storage on the painted surface centre and lower portion of the canvas.
