Description
A close up of rouched white fabric, possibly cotton sheets.
Commentary
An unusual semi abstract study of fabric from close quarters. This appears to be an exercise in painterly technique, demonstrating Flemings facility with pale tones and brush work. Likely a later work in England. Strongly defined impasto imparts an almost sculptural quality to the paint.
Attribution
Attributed to Alec Fleming.
Given to Alec Fleming in the catalogue.
Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming”
Verso
A Fleming in marker. Some random white paint marks.
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
