Description

A mountain range with scudding clouds against a blue sky. Desert landscape to the foreground.

Commentary

A sketch, which was possibly painted to inform a later painting. Seemingly rapidly executed, undoubtedly en plein air in a single sitting. The landscape suggests France. The bold, wide brush, vigorous paint marks suggest a confident painter in command of their palette and capturing the necessary information with economy and competence.

Attribution

Attributed to Alec Fleming.

Given to Alec Fleming in the catalogue.

Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming”

How attributions are worded

Verso

A Fleming in blue marker.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Significant dirt, dust and contact marks, probably from storage, which should clean. Damage to painted surface in the top right hand side.. Damage to bottom right hand corner.
