Description
Tall obelisks and imagined buildings towering above smaller tenements against a deep blue sky.
Commentary
Painted in an almost naive style. This almost abstract colour blocked painting is experimental for Alec Fleming. Painted with rapidity, the scrubbed and scumbled visible brushwork and little attention to detail suggest the mould breaking of mid period Alec rather than Barbara Fleming.
Attribution
Attributed to Alec Fleming.
Given to Alec Fleming in the catalogue.
Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming”
Verso
A Fleming.
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
Condition
Poor. Damage to top left corner. Flattening to bottom right.
