Description
A collection of houses with buildings in the background against rain soaked streets.
Commentary
An unusual and perhaps experimental composition for Alec Fleming. Heavy impasto use and a dark, muted and limited colour palette, with a narrow tonal range and almost abstract approach to depicting the buildings.
Attribution
Attributed to Alec Fleming.
Given to Alec Fleming in the catalogue.
Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming - No signature”
Signature and inscriptions
No signature.
Verso
A Fleming in marker. A number of annotations in relation to four distinct sketches for further di verse compositions. With the recurrence of initial GS.
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
Condition
Fair. Some spotting from storage on the painted surface. Unvarnished Possibly painted in the studio from sketches. From the panel dimensions and subject- possibly painted in England.
