Description

A row of white cottages with hills in the background and a low stone wall and fields in the foreground across a small road.

Commentary

Possibly in England or Wales. The textured paint used for the rocks, house and wall, along with the confident application of white with strong flat brushwork feels like Alec Fleming in his later career.

Attribution

Attributed to Alec Fleming.

Given to Alec Fleming in the catalogue.

Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming No signature”

How attributions are worded

Signature and inscriptions

No signature.

Verso

A Fleming in blaock capitals.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Good condition. No staining or foxing. Some lifting of the paint surface to the top right. Paint damage to the top left. Unvarnished.
