Description

A bearded man with long hair in a blue shirt.

Commentary

Possibly belonging to a period of rapid alla prima portrait sittings during the early 1970s. A confident and well observed study. Confident and assertive flat brush work building up layers to capture the fall of light on the face.

Attribution

Attributed to Alec Fleming.

Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming. No signature.”

How attributions are worded

Signature and inscriptions

No signature.

Verso

A Fleming in blue marker in block capitals.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Some water staining to the top rear. No obvious damage to the paint surface.
