Description

A young woman with shoulder length hair, in a blue dress, buttoned at the neck. with a brown/ grey background.

Commentary

A likely alla prima oil sketch from life. Flat brush flesh tones built up on the face, typical of later A Fleming, The blue of the dress is rapidly and sketchily applied with some attention to the achievement of form around the breasts and shoulders.

Attribution

Attributed to Alec Fleming.

Given to Alec Fleming in the catalogue.

Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming”

How attributions are worded

Verso

A Fleming in block capitals- -marker pen.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Some staining to the rear. Top right portion of the painting has been broken away- possibly from water damage and has been re affixed with a proprietary glue.
