Description
View across a sandy cove with a monument on a hill to the background.
Commentary
The smooth flat tonality and muted palette of the hills are reminiscent of late LS Lowry. The experimental palette and influence of contemporaries is indicative of A Fleming. The almost naive approach to the composition is enhanced by notable impasto.
Attribution
Possibly Alec Fleming (attribution uncertain).
The catalogue’s attribution is itself tentative; it is reproduced above and not resolved here.
Catalogue wording: “A Fleming ?? ??”
Verso
A Fleming.
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
Condition
Fair. Significant flattening damage to the bottom left corner- likely from transportation/storage. Some superficial spotting damage to the overall paint surface.
