Description

A man dressed in southern African traditional dress.

Commentary

A different subject, painted with strong multi directional strokes, painted possibly when on holiday in South Africa.

Attribution

Attributed to Alec Fleming.

The catalogue records a signature but qualifies it; the attribution is given as the cataloguer’s opinion.

Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming Signed A Fleming in capitals in marker by a later hand bottom right.”

How attributions are worded

Signature and inscriptions

Signed A Fleming in capitals in marker by a later hand bottom right.

Verso

A Fleming in marker.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Good Unvarnished.
