Description
A man, silhouetted, fishing from a river bank beyond a white rail fence. Moored flat bottomed boats reflected in the tree line suggest rural France.
Commentary
Bold brush strokes, limited palette, flat planes of colour and a restricted tonality suggest the influence of Munch. The strong reflections in the water and the experimental almost Fauvist approach to colour and tonal block- ing suggest a mature Alec Fleming style.
Attribution
Attributed to Alec Fleming.
Given to Alec Fleming in the catalogue.
Catalogue wording: “A Fleming”
Verso
A Fleming in block capitals to the rear, in marker pen.
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
Condition
Flattening damage to the bottom left corner. Some small dark contact marks to the painted surface, notably the river.
