Description
A white house by a bridge over a small river- seen from the opposite bank. with a stand of four bare trees to the right hand side of the canvas.
Commentary
A striking composition with a natural scene, possibly in England. It is suggested that this was painted en plein air, from the opposite side of the river that is depicted in the foreground. The bold, rapid and large strokes, especially to the vegetation in the foreground are reminiscent of Rouault or Soutine. Possibly this was painted in England after a re- turn from a period of open air painting in France.

Verso
A Fleming in marker pen- in block capitals.
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
Condition
Fair condition. Unvarnished with some detachment of dry pigment from the heavy impasto elements, possibly from handling. Some flattening to the top left corner of the painted surface.
