Description
A small crowd moving through a village street or square. Possibly in France with a bare tree to the right hand side.
Commentary
A scene full of movement, with suggested figures, some in contre jour, and roughly scrubbed in shadows. The wood and stone houses with vernacular architecture suggestive of rural France are caught in strong sunlight. The light palette and strong flat brush work with visible painterly marks suggest mid period Alec Fleming. Highly likely to have been painted in situ.
Attribution
Attributed to Alec Fleming.
Given to Alec Fleming in the catalogue.
Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming- No signature”
Signature and inscriptions
No signature.
Verso
A Fleming in block capitals- marker. Some tentative pencil marks, possibly a first pass at the sketch, on the toothed side of the board.
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
Condition
Good. Some slight water marking to the reverse- possible storage related.
