Description

A young woman in a green shirt with blond hair against a brown background.

Commentary

Alec Fleming’s use of short horizontal hog’s hair brush stokes to capture skin tones, especially across bridge of the nose and neck is typical. He has also in keeping with his stylistic preference adopted a single colour for the clothing of the study and a contrasting colour for the background wall.

A Fleming in pencil in a cursive hand. Primer contact marks.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
