Description

A woman in three quarter view. seated in a cream coat with a blue neckerchief.

Commentary

More sketchily rendered than some of A Fleming’s later works, this is undoubtedly of that period and typically drawn from life, The sitter’s expression is less convincingly captured than some, but the brush marks are undoubtedly late Fleming. The loose rendering of the sitter's coat shows confidence and ability.

Attribution

Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming”

How attributions are worded

Verso

A Fleming in blue marker.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Fair some water marking to the verso.
