Description

A head and shoulders study of a woman with shoulder length hair in a green roll neck sweater.

Commentary

A striking image of a woman in three quarter view, well lit in what is likely to have been a single day time sitting, from life. The face has been particularly well painted with a light palette with high tonality and delicate brush work. This perhaps represents an evolution in A Fleming’s mature style. Possibly painted contemporaneously with Woman In A Turquoise Dress - Cat 17]

Attribution

Attributed to Alec Fleming.

The catalogue records a signature but qualifies it; the attribution is given as the cataloguer’s opinion.

Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming signed in marker pen lower right hand.”

How attributions are worded

Signature and inscriptions

Signed in marker pen lower right hand.

Verso

No significant marks to the reverse.

Catalogue no. 18* — The asterisk against this catalogue number refers to the catalogue introduction’s note on the “A Fleming” marking on the reverse of many boards, reproduced below. It flags the caveat; it is not itself evidence of authorship.

Source note, catalogue introduction

Many boards are marked “A Fleming” in marker pen, in block capitals, on the reverse. Some of these may be by Barbara Fleming.

It is unlikely that the same marker pen, in the same hand and in the same position on the board, would have been used over several decades. In places the marker is written over older paint marks, staining and scarring, which suggests a later application — potentially at a single date, to denote ownership rather than attribution, and probably by Alec Fleming.

Condition

Good. No damage to the paint surface. No foxing or water- marks. Unvarnished.
