Description
A man in a dark suit and hat walking away from us, past steps on a deserted French village street.
Commentary
A rapidly painted street scene, possibly in France given the vernacular architecture. Most likely painted en plein aire. The thick confident and swift brush strokes suggest A Fleming.
Attribution
Attributed to Alec Fleming.
Given to Alec Fleming in the catalogue.
Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming”
Verso
A Fleming in marker.
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
