Description
A study of a young woman in three quarter view, head slightly tilted against a blue green background.
Commentary
Distinctly different in style if not subject matter. Multi directional brush strokes and scumbling create a dynamism and luminosity not often seen in A F’s more orthodox portraits. The cold raking light hitting the bridge of the nose is particularly well captured, suggesting a portrait from life.
Attribution
Attributed to Alec Fleming.
Given to Alec Fleming in the catalogue.
Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming Unsigned”
Signature and inscriptions
Unsigned.
Verso
A Fleming in black marker. Some blue primer over paint.
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
