Description

A man in a blue shirt, striped tie and navy trousers standing with a cane in an interior.

Commentary

This could well be a standing self portrait. The proportions suggest that it was painted from a photographic reference which would be unusual for A F. Likely painted in England possibly 1950s. All of the signature elements of A F’s emerging style are present, including impasto, broad flat brush marks, attention to light fall, especially on the skin and rapid confident painting on a smooth surface with vigorous strokes.
