Description
Nude half portrait of a young woman.
Commentary
Signed A Fleming in marker in block capitals to the bottom right. This does not correspond to Alec Fleming’s usual signature and is in the same hand as most verso attributions in the catalogue. The painting is an unusual subject for Alec Fleming but well captured, clearly from life, alla prima, and showing the influence of Post Impressionist including Bonnard, Vuillard and Munch. Likely painted in England in A Fleming’s mature period.
Attribution
Attributed to Alec Fleming.
Given to Alec Fleming in the catalogue.
Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming”
Verso
A Fleming in black- marker.
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
Condition
Good.
