Description

Half portrait study of a man with a military moustache in a green jacket and brown tie, in three quarter views.

Commentary

An accomplished portrait by A Fleming, which may be a self portrait from life. The animation in the expression and capture of light in characteristic flat planes of pure colour suggest a mature painter confident in their mark making. This painting could be from the mid 1960s which would place Alec Fleming at the ago of 60 plus. The reserved areas of pale blue primed canvas to denote light are particularly well rendered.

Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming”

How attributions are worded

Verso

A Fleming in blue marker.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Good. Some slight staining on the verso.
