Description
A bridge over a river flowing towards us with expressionistic trees and to the background.
Commentary
Likely an en plein aire painting with strong expressionistic bold colours and textured paint application. The ‘lollipop’ trees and bold ‘hogs hair’ brush marks feel in the style of early Alec Fleming, whilst the bridge and water are uncharacteristically hesitant. The overall tonal range, the drama of the palette and the references to European Modernism feel much closer to Alec than Barbara.

Verso
A Fleming in blue marker A pre- liminiary indistinct charcoal sketch of the first composition.
The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.
Condition
Fair two white contact marks streak the top right corner. Unvarnished.
