Description

A study of a young woman in profile in a blue dress against a grey background.

Commentary

Possibly immediately post war or late 1940s. A very early and accomplished Alec Fleming in an academic style, with little experimentation or influence from modern contemporary painters. No abstraction, texture, tonal variation or expressionistic palette. Probably painted from studio sittings.

Attribution

Attributed to Alec Fleming.

Given to Alec Fleming in the catalogue.

Catalogue wording: “Alec Fleming”

How attributions are worded

Verso

A Fleming Wife -on the hand made stretcher in later black marker- usual hand.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Condition

Canvas is stretched with nails, with appropriate rusting and fading to the unprimed portions. Some small damage to painted surface, but not punctured through. Slight foxing due to age.
