Description

Boats on the water with a city scape on the shoreline.

Commentary

A very rapid, fluid en plein aire sketch of boats off an urban shoreline. The impasto and directional brush strokes suggest Alec Fleming in France. The sketch gives just enough information to inform a future painting.

Attribution

Attributed to Alec Fleming.

How attributions are worded

Signature and inscriptions

Verso

A Fleming Some random blue paint marks.

The reverse is marked “A Fleming” in block capitals. Many boards in the collection carry this marking, and some of them are considered to be by Barbara Fleming. The marking may record ownership rather than authorship and is not treated here as evidence of attribution.

Good Un varnished A single piercing top centre, likely from informal hanging.
